Authentic Skill

Train with Sifu Matthew Laurie and benefit from the direct lineage to Ip Man and the close relationships from teacher to student in each generation. Sifu Laurie is one of Master Darryl Moy’s most senior students and trains regularly with his Sigong Grandmaster Michael Tse, including travelling to China to train with Grandmaster Ip Chun, son of Ip Man.

Sifu Laurie has trained with Master Moy and Grandmaster Tse for over 20 years and he loves the skills and the teaching. His understanding of Wild Goose Qigong and Shaolin Chun Yuen Quan brings depth and context to the Wing Chun class and many students learn more than one skill too.

Practical Self Defence

Ip Man Wing Chun is deeply practical and develops fundamental skills such as stance, footwork, positioning and sensitivity all of which offer an advantage over opponents. Compared to many other martial arts, the skill is quick to learn and put into practice. The syllabus is:

  • Sui Lim Tao - the first form train the stance, internal strength (Gung Lik) releasing power (Fa Ging)

  • Tsum Kui - the second form trains footwork, forearm techniques and kicking

  • Bui Tze - the third form trains short and long distance techniques including using the elbows and fingers

Students also have opportunities to learn Baat Jam Do (Butterfly knives), Luk Dim Boon (6 1/2 point pole) and Muk Yang Jong (Wooden Dummy).

Chi Sau Training

The heart of Wing Chun training is Chi Sau (Sticking Hands), an enjoyable way of training with partner that teaches how to apply the skill and reach a high level. Correct Chi Sau training develops sensitivity, understanding of distance and angle, good positioning and footwork. With regular practice students learn how to follow, read and use an opponents strength in order to take control of a situation.

By touching many different hands, you will gradually understand how to handle different kinds of people; those who are strong or weaker, taller or shorter, aggressive or defensive and with longer or shorter reach. This process will also teach you more about yourself, your habits and what you need to do to develop and go deeper. To do this we often needs to go beyond the limits that we impose upon ourselves, which is why path of Wing Chun can lead to profound personal development.
